Top 40 Greatest Music Albums
by MelverneArkady

In the interests of variety and fairness, I have kept the chart to one album per artist. I didn't realise how hard it would be to narrow my choice down to forty, there are a lot more albums I want to put in here.

One of the greatest metal albums of all time. Mastodon's first four full-length albums were vaguely based on an elemental theme, Leviathan obviously representing water. With Moby Dick as a narrative backbone, this album was Mastodon developing the sound they are now known for. The Lifesblood EP and Remission, their earlier releases, were raw powerhouses of drop-tuned riffs and guttural shouts. These releases also served as catalysts for Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds to shed the heavier skin of their previous band, Four Hour Fogger, and for Brann Dailor to (slightly) relax from the mathcore lead guitar-accompanying blastbeat drumming of his former band Lethargy. While Remission is a great album, Leviathan truly showcases the talent of the group, both musically and as a cohesive narrative. It functions as a standalone piece, and also slots nicely into the overall arc of Mastodon as a band; even aside from being one of four 'elemental' albums, their first three full-length albums contain long, operatic tracks based on the story of the Elephant Man. The one on Leviathan, Joseph Merrick, is by far the best, fitting nicely with the themes of bones and individuality that run through both Moby Dick and Leviathan.

All round, a solid and cohesive metal album that projected the path the band would later walk, while still remaining great in it's own right. The album is both a journey and a destination.

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.6/100, a mean average of 85.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.5.

Just when I thought that I'd got a handle on the chart, you throw in a left field choice like Fats Waller. I like that. Not predicable at all.

Good stuff....probably the most unique chart ive seen on here so far. Some of my favourite artists, some that I (ignorantly) would never think to listen to and some that im intrigued by. The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble is playing as I type...interesting.....thankyou

I really love some of this stuff and yet a handful of these selections leave me pretty dumbfounded.

Wonderfully weird chart. It's hard to imagine anyone with Jesus Lizard and Cristina in the same chart. As indifferent as I feel about quite a few of the albums here, I'm psyched to see Fiona, Fugazi and Dino Jr, even if those are probably my least favorite records by each of them
