Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Interesting picks for the 80s! An unknown-to-me Jacksons album being ranked higher than Thriller is definitely unexpected. I guess I'll have to give it a closer listen, and will look over the rest of the list to find some lesser-known gems.

Complete chart of 1980!
Tam, this is classy stuff. You're one of the only people on this site who gives fair and proper recognition to soul/r 'n' b/funk acts, and to some of the great female voices. I'm guessing from the picks you might have lived through this year, for my money it was one of the very best - every genre produced classics - the radio was great, "Top Of The Pops" was great, live shows were cheap, and the album still meant something.
