The loner looks unflinchingly at 60s idealism, at the Woodstock generation, at the transient nature of life and love, at the media, at the heart of men, at us... The result is music beyond being inspired. Downright haunted. Bleak yet uplifting.

A magnificent and eclectic collection of songs. No wonder its follow-up ("Harvest") sold in vast quantities: the expectations could only be very high after this.

Bum notes? Technical flaws? Yes, quite a lot. The accent here is on feel, authenticity, spontaneity, real expressions of sorrow and weariness for the friends lost to their own excesses. A potential catastrophe turned into a genuine masterpiece.

Beautiful songs produced- by Daniel Lanois- in a unique way: one man and his guitar had never sounded so electric and huge before. A series of solo, live-in-the-studio performances that sound like a band.

- landing on the water
- greendale
