As a reviewer said about it at the time of its release: "it's all there if you listen". Eclectic to the point of schizophrenia, it's a Himalayas of songwriting, an embarrassment of riches... [First added to this chart: 09/23/2015]

No other album ever had such a cultural impact on release. A first in oh so many ways: lyrics printed on the sleeve, a groundbreaking packaging that ushers in the album sleeve-as-work of art in itself, songs that flow into one another, DT (direct injection in layman's terms), music totally intended as a studio creation-not conceived then to be performed live, far-out sonic ideas galore, "hidden ending"- since become a cliché, etc... Not to mention the multi-coloured, hallucinated songwriting. Maybe not to everybody's taste but, come on, if there has to be one number one ever, this is it. [First added to this chart: 09/23/2015]

How come it's only at number 3 in the overall chart? The most innovative album ever (with Sgt Pepper). And that's not even an opinion when you consider the inventions made during its recording sessions, notably engineer Ken Townsend coming up with ADT (Artificial Double-Tracking, itself opening the door to phasing and other cool « psychedelic » effects), the pioneering use of backwards tapes, "Tomorrow never knows" in its entirety, etc...
Oh and there's the songwriting. Pure genius.

Not only is it, for one of the first times, an album conceived as an entity, as opposed to a collection of potential singles, but the absence of filler was in itself the main incentive/ challenge that pushed Brian Wilson to make "Pet sounds". Just a quick glance through the track-list reveals an incredible amount of classics. Listening to them, one can only marvel at their ever-lasting freshness. The warm, inventive production doesn't hurt either. [First added to this chart: 09/23/2015]

A Hard Day's Night

The pinnacle of their early phase, introducing the brand new Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar, so influential on the Byrds. Fresh, brilliant, inventive, romantic and rocking; and entirely self-penned (Lennon-McCartney) at a time when most of their contemporaries were still relying on covers. "There's a place" already contains the promise of the inner journey to come. One of the greatest debuts ever. 10 of its 14 songs were recorded in one day- February 11, 1963- in live takes with minimal overdubbing. [First added to this chart: 09/23/2015]

A "turned-on" return to the formula of their first two albums: 8 self-penned new numbers and 6 covers, with added depth and instrumental innovations, notably the first fade-in intro on "Eight days a week". [First added to this chart: 09/23/2015]
