Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

You have 15 of my 50 top albums inside so I must rate you quite high. I do agree though that your choices, at least top 30, or even further down, seem too "safe" (at least I am happy to find Porcupine Tree). Apart from rating high the classics, I try to add other albums and bands that don't top BEA which I really like top, it is the best way to make others discover good albums they don't know because to be honest with your top 30 I just say "I agree" or "it isn't the best album from x but their most famous album" but I never say "I should listen to this!". Just my input, it is a very good chart anyway and it became chart of the day so congrats :)
