Iron Maiden- The Studio Albums
by AAL2014

Iron Fucking Maiden. A band who I've seen 3 times live. A band who all of my friends listen to and can relate to me with. A band who should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Iron Maiden has conquered the world and commanded a global audience for well over 30 years now. They should be celebrated. I celebrate them and so should you.

From Killers to Powerslave to Fear of the Dark to the new Book of Souls (this chart is old, the new one is now Senjutsu!) this is my ranking of arguably my favorite heavy metal band's excellent discography. My favorite Maiden lineup (one of my favorite musical ensembles in rock history mind you) is Bruce, Steve, Adrian, Dave, and Nicko, but there have been a few notable lineups and they will all be featured here.

Enjoy and Up the Irons.

The Crown Jewel: The run of incredible Maiden albums (fronted by Bruce or not) continued into 1984 in a big way. Powerslave might be their best record from start to finish and is for sure my favorite. Aces High is one of the best opening tracks in metal, and Powerslave and Rime end the album in a way that Maiden probably never matched after that. [First added to this chart: 06/30/2016]

Deserving Runner Up: My second favorite Maiden album and one of my favorite albums ever. The replay-ability is strong with this one. The concept revolving around the seventh son and good and evil is very engaging and the band wrote some of the best songs of their career to back it. Bruce Dickinson's vocals are incredible here. Worthy Bronze: Very close to being the second spot. Honestly ask me on any given day and you could get a different answer in picking between this record and the Number of the Beast and Seventh Son. With this album, the instrumentation is taken to another level. Nicko McBrain joins the band and provides a slightly more progressive edge with his drumming and Bruce Dickinson seems so much more comfortable as the singer in Iron Maiden. Revelations, Where Eagles Dare, and To Tame A Land. Wow. [First added to this chart: 06/30/2016]

Iron Maiden's breakthrough and first record with Bruce is an undeniable classic. I respect Clive Burr so much but I might rank this a bit higher if Nicko McBrain was on it, I just prefer his playing style a bit more. The highlights here are indeed very high but Invaders, mainly as an opening track, is a bit underwhelming, albeit a nice introduction for Bruce Dickinson’s active and flexible vocals. Hallowed Be Thy Name is one of the greatest songs ever written. [First added to this chart: 06/30/2016]

A strong second album with a big step up in production, performance, and songwriting. This album, in retrospect, makes it seem like Maiden may have been (different but) okay without Bruce Dickinson. They certainly would never have made it as big, but this is a truly great album with a shit ton of fiery energy. [First added to this chart: 06/30/2016]

Adding keys served Maiden well on this 1986 classic. They provide a progressive element that carried Maiden through the latter half of the 80's. Not a bad track on the album. Alexander the Great is a gem. [First added to this chart: 06/30/2016]

The comeback album all other comeback albums should be measured up to. Bruce and Adrian come back and the magic returns. Maybe not far from the direction Maiden would have gone after Seventh Son had Adrian stayed... [First added to this chart: 06/30/2016]

I really enjoyed this album when it first came out, coinciding with my introduction to the band and first Maiden concert not long before it's release. It would be higher if this list was made a few years ago. The Book of Souls is better overall but there are a lot of interesting ideas on this album including some of Maiden's best and most progressive work like Coming Home, When The Wild Wind Blows, and Isle of Avalon. Another strong record from 21st century Maiden. I don't love every single second of this album but the high points FAR outweigh the low. The Red and The Black is a triumph and epic in a live setting. Tears of A Clown is a bit of stripped down hard rock Maiden but it's still very good. Empire of the Clouds is a masterpiece. [First added to this chart: 06/30/2016]
