5/7/2020: Heya lockdown queens! We're half way through this megalomaniac's fever dream of a year and the music that has been coming out has been pretty damn good. Here's what's taken my fancy this year so far.

It's as authentic as the honest West Yorkshire valleys it so clearly loves, for all of their positives and hardships. Gorillaz are back! And this time, it's for real! The big concepts of their high flying early releases are gone, and instead we're given a delightful, honest and intricate collaborative project that excels in its details. It's like whacking these artists all in a studio to vent their feelings and jam together. The result is pure listening joy. Thank you Damon, we love you. [First added to this chart: 11/02/2020]
Gorillaz are back! And this time, it's for real! A triumphant, introspective return, in blazing, grey-on-pink, Drag Race meets Star Trek fashion. Lady Gaga arrived in the pop world decreeing freedom and self love; a decade on, and it seems the one in need of that treatment is herself. But while her lyrics look inward, her sound projects outwards. Chromatica is a laser-shooting space adventure firmly rooted in personal, human experience. If we’re all going to be honest with ourselves and face our own battles, we may as well jazz them up a few starships, alien armour and lightyears of dance-pop beats. A long awaited second full length LP, and wow. This is Uchis showing off her Colombian and Latin music roots in force. A torrent of glistening, exquisite synths and beats, that tour multiple genres under the guidance of her ever lusty voice. Less than coming close to the 'difficult second album' stereotypes, she sails right past any such notions. Neo-RnB at its finest. [First added to this chart: 11/20/2020]

Haim's third installment delivery summer in the city vibes across tales of modern life and romance. The down-to-earth approach is impossible not to like, shining with delicate, refined production. So much of the recent 60s/70s soft rock resurgence has been blighted by boredom and a lack of excitement, but not so here; 'Women In Music Pt. III' is delight to listen to. Best songs: I Don't Think I Can Do This Again, Deal Wiv It, Teenage Headache Dreams
RYC doesn't want to be the "album of a generation", but it feels like the album *of* a generation. Nostalgia, 'our generation' and other such phrases usually end up leading to generic, sparse conversation. To hinge your whole album around such themes in a less than specific way risks going down a similar path. Not so with this record though. An album on the pulse of why we seek comfort in the good times of the past, and whose sound begs for you to make more memories whilst it makes up the soundtrack. Making A Door Less Open feels like a refreshing f*ck you to over-zealous fans and push to make something the band actual want to make. Sorry deliver the sleazy ennui soundtrack for the 20-somethings of today; an innovative patchwork of alternative goodness, mixing its sounds and words like a hazy drug-filled evening. Without ever fully giving the game away, Sorry maintain a prosaic mystery in their style, allowing the bands members to feel just as cool and non-caring as they come across on their debut. Goransson it would appear is an immense new talent on the film score scene, his soundtrack for Tenet is an LSD trip in itself, let alone how it feels when you're actually watching it.
