This chart is under construction. Only albums which I own on vinyl, CD and tape are included. Albums are being added as re-listened to ensuring commentary is relevant to how I feel about the album now, not necessarily when I first bought it.

When I bought this album and played it for the first time it sounded light something which had been forged in a different universe! There were sounds and effects on this album which were so clever and compelling to listen to that I played it and 'Exit' continually when studying for my 'O' Levels all those years ago. I still give it a spin quite regularly and still sounds ahead of it's time.

Although I have this on CD and Vinyl it is always the vinyl copy which gets the spin. The depth of sound and vocals on New Gold Dream are superb. Other favourites are Glittering Prize and Someone Somewhere in Summertime. Best Simple Minds album from the eighties however it is a close call between this and the more up to date sound of Big Music imo.

Game changing eighties synth pop/rock album, possibly underrated by non musicians, particularly in relation to what Nick Rodes accomplished with the keyboard aspects. Four absolutely cracking eighties tracks in 'Rio', 'Hungry Like the Wolf', 'Save a Prayer' and 'New Religion'. One of those albums I have to reach for on a hot July weekend morning before heading to the beach.

I played this tape a lot when travelling up and down the Country back in the early ninties, it always took me back to the concert at the Cornwall Coliseum when i saw Robert Plant and his new band. I like the move towards a more synth based sound than in Led Zeppelin. To be clear I love the Led Zep sound and have all of the Historic LZ albums on CD and vinyl. The album sounds as fresh to me today as it did back in the eighties when I first bought the cassette. I now have a mint vinyl version and it is always a pleasant nostalgic listen. Pledge Pin and Slow Dancer are my top tracks. Considering that this arrived thee years after Led Zeppelin 'In Through the Outdoor' it is clear to see the direction Robert Plant has taken.

I remember a school mate taping this album for me, shock horror!!! Record sleeves used to have a scull and crossbones stating 'taping is killing music'! Ironically, now you can go on YouTube and listen to just about any album you want for nothing more than the pain of shite adverts!
Without doubt, the best Magnum album with a cover to rival Yes or Rush. Waited a long time to get this on vinyl as the tape snapped many years ago! [First added to this chart: 04/10/2021]

Another excellent album from Rush, this with more use of synths. I note some Rush fans don't like the more synth based albums, to be honest Rush were using a Moog back in 2112 and A Farewell to Kings Days, albeit more for sound effects. Can't agree there are no standout tracks, try Subdivisions, The Analog Kid, Digital Man and New World Man.

This album is a lot further down the pecking order than I think it should be. A good listening experience from the eighties output. I think this album and Till We Have Faces compliment each other even given the synths used on both albums and the electric feel the Linn Drum provides, however that said, they are in parts, also very different.

The best Michael Jackson album by a mile. He looks like a boy with the world in front of him on the front cover, what happened? 'Thriller is the standout track but the rest are excellent too. The construction of the backing tracks on this album is a synth enthusiast dream, Roland Jupiter 8, TR808, Linn Drum, DX7 all put in an appearance to name but a few. Bliss!

Pat Metheny style is difficult to define but very identifiable. Tracks range from real fusion/rock groove to get you moving, to the chill out jazz meandering like 'Are You Going With Me?' It is often difficult to distinguish between what is a synth, what is a guitar and what may some sort of horn, which makes the listening experience even more enjoyable. Listening to this album always has the ability to make me feel immediately chilled and happy.

I agree with an earlier comment about the sleeve artwork, a great typically progressive/folk style album sleeve. The album provides an interesting listen with a slightly heavier sound than earlier works. Some superb lead guitar work on this album.
