Rock 'n' roll. Where it all started. It elevated black folk music to something higher together with soul, but also introduced an important quality of popular music: emphasis and de-emphasis of beats. It kicked jazz off the main stage and brought white and black people closer together. It is characterised by a heavy backbeat - simple as that. It became very associated with electric guitars, but the first couple of rock 'n' roll tracks were accompanied by a piano (I Got a Woman, Tutti Frutti, Mess Around).
How to recognize rock 'n' roll: when you can bop your head to the backbeat without it feeling awkward.

Don't be mistaken, this album contains covers of rock 'n' roll tracks by black artists. Black artists were simply slower with releasing an album.
