In the '50s you had jazz, religious music, classical music, and folk music of various groups that vary in their degree of artistic value (traditional pop, R&B), and of course any combination of those. Ray Charles did something strange that stood perpendicular on anything anyone was doing: He started singing louder; then Little Richard smashed the piano louder and his drummer hit the backbeat harder; James Brown hit the one louder; Jimi Hendrix made his effects extremer; you get the picture. The popular music era is the era of extent. It's about recognizing that taking things to their extreme creates a difference. In the meantime soul has never left the scene; still now soul tracks are being recorded, not very often full albums anymore of course, but this genre will probably never die.
