soul
by Boltzmann

In the '50s you had jazz, religious music, classical music, and folk music of various groups that vary in their degree of artistic value (traditional pop, R&B), and of course any combination of those. Ray Charles did something strange that stood perpendicular on anything anyone was doing: He started singing louder; then Little Richard smashed the piano louder and his drummer hit the backbeat harder; James Brown hit the one louder; Jimi Hendrix made his effects extremer; you get the picture. The popular music era is the era of extent. It's about recognizing that taking things to their extreme creates all the difference. In the meantime soul has never left the scene; still now soul tracks are being recorded, not very often full albums anymore of course, but this genre will probably never die.

Chronologically ordered, and inclusion does not imply anything about the quality.
