A song like No Machine is a prime example to why I prefer organic acoustic music to electronics: it's human, and I gravitate towards the human rather than computer. The opening lyric "Let no machine eat away our dream", paired with both cute and flirty comments resembling love to the core, stirs up a candle of compassion inside my soul. The piano-based tunes are formidable, Evol showing chord progression in high class and Lenker sounding breathier than average (the Candleflame on guitar is also great btw, Cell Phone Says even better).
At first, I thought Real House was about death, but it's also semi, it's more about finding home. However, the frame of melancholia and longing is admirable in the simplistic nature by one piano note at a time. Lenker's observing of clashing significant memories of both sorrow and joy, is in a league of her own. Unique cut. While, Sadness As A Gift isn't as outstanding in the composition aspect, the way the country spirit upbrings on your emotions, especially in the lyrics ("Been searching for your eyes, all I see is blue skies, and that old man beats his crooked cane, it's time to let go"), is just as potent. Always a dense pleasure to hear when people can use simple instrumentation for complex means. Though less lyrically handsome, the heart stays huge in Ruined, an atmospheric demonstration of piano rock mastery.
On the flipside, Fool's foolish Radiohead-y slippery, Free Treasure's derivativeness, the unnatural combo of mellow vocals and rhythm on Vampire Empire, as well as the scrapped lyrics and non-engaging melodiousness of Already Lost, lets the album down from four precious stars. That doesn't matter in the long run though, because the good material has earned Lenker all the internet trophies. [First added to this chart: 12/15/2024]
