Their best album? Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, Lifes Rich Pageant, and yes, Chronic Town would like a word. I have come to appreciate this album more than I have in years by virtue of coming to peace with "Everybody Hurts." I don't hate it as much as I thought I did. I get it a little more - directly addressed to teenagers struggling with depression. The fact that I found out that Bill Berry wrote the music also served to elevate it. Their masterpiece period had long since gone by the wayside, but this was definitely the best they did since then. They came up with a really rich idiom which was much heavier than their last two albums in the service of a strong song cycle on loss and mortality. But I still by far prefer the old Stipe. Another beautiful entry for this band. "What Do You Think" is underrated among their songs. I saw them at Tulane in '92 and that song was great in concert. [First added to this chart: 11/29/2024]

A nice swan-song for these merchants (see what I did there) of folk-pop. Lots of luscious fruit from the garden (ear-candy) here. [First added to this chart: 11/29/2024]

Some chaff here, but the best songs are fantastic. For whatever reason, the recording of Julian Swales's shoegaze guitar heroics are the best-recorded they ever were here - strange, given that Hugh Jones produced Strange Free World as well. [First added to this chart: 11/29/2024]
