Of course, everyone wants the demos to get a nice sheen and be released, but no one knows where the master tapes are. Hopefully not lost in the Universal fire or recorded over. Anyway, this is the greatest album shoegaze ever produced. It was the songwriting. Neil gave these songs a heft and yearning beyond just the wonderful sounds he and Christian made with their guitars that make this immortal. It's one of my favorite albums of all-time in spite of being dragged down by the relatively-lame "Altogether" (which is still important to the album for its lyrics, but they could have added a ton more shoegaze ear-candy to it) and "Melon Yellow." (There's a video on YouTube of the band rehearsing the latter track with far more sturm und drang and dramatic guitar effects, and it's far, far better. Too bad they didn't do that on the record.) Some of the EP tracks added to the US version would have been better. But it's a masterpiece in spite of that.

A tour-de-force of punked-up '70s guitar rock. By the way, I want to get off my chest that the band's name is dumb. "Smashing Pumpkins" would have worked - like being named after an activity, and without the article, like Talking Heads - but what the hell is *a* smashing pumpkin? You get me? Anyway, last 5-star for this year.

Best songs here are of course "Crank," "Ursa Major Space Station," and "The Nude," but it has lots of great moments. Listening to it cranked up is a great way to get a splitting headache. The last 4.5 on the list.

I always appreciate notes in year lists. Some great albums in there.
