What's the most disappointing second album by a band with a great debut?

Surprisingly, I found next to no examples of this represented on my chart of all time faves. Actually I find mostly that the second and third albums are when an artist/band really puts their shit together and kill it.

At #100 on my chart we come upon the amazing debut by The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Gilded Palace of Sin. The follow up is comparitively lackluster and dead, Burrito Deluxe.

Otherwise, the debuts I really love are few and the only ones represented on my top 100-150 faves, almost all have equally great or in my eyes greater follow ups. Illmatic's follow up I've never heard in full or if I have its been years. But that also may be another example. The Clash's follow up to their self titled classic debut, Give Em Enough Rope, is really good but not as focused or brilliant as their amazing debut.

Television's second album always struck me as not great and a big letdown.

Can't think of any. Usually if you can make a whole good album you can make another one.

The first artist that comes to mind is Matchbox 20 and their follow-up album Mad Season. Yourself or Someone Else Like You was great alt rock for the time with memorable songs like Push, 3am and Back 2 Good, but their next LP was pretty disappointing.

Others that I can think of include:

Evil Empire by Rage Against the Machine
Plastic Surgery Disasters by Dead Kennedys
The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 by The Traveling Wilburys
White Light/White Heat by The Velvet Underground (pretty good album, but not amazing like the debut)

Totally disagree - all of the Velvetsโ€™ albums on Verve/MGM are zingers for different reasons.

Obvious one for me would be Second Coming by The Stone Roses after S/T. Massive Attackโ€™s Protection isnโ€™t a patch on Blue Lines either.

Clams Casino
Coldplay
Franz Ferdinand
Guillemots

Guillemots takes the cake for me. Their debut threw me off kilter (starting with those EPs) and ultimately turned me into a music connoisseur, but the follow-up Red was not that at all. A 180... and unfortunate.

*maybe Arcade Fire, but I like Neon Bible a lot (still a substantial drop-off from Funeral). The Suburbs is where they really lost me.
** also maybe Kanye West. i'm not a fan of much post-Dropout.

Whilst the Beta Band are trending, I would say there debut album was a bit of a headscratcher after the terrific 3 EPs release (which in a way functioned as an unofficial debut) I grew to like their actual debut though.
