Haunting recording, almost like a natural take on what Caretaker goes for. I’m not sure if it was accidental or not, but the way the record’s presented creates an entirely different atmosphere than what it sound like sung live. I wanted to go Maori for NZ and managed to dig a couple records up, but I just happened to get around to this one first. Looking forward to the rest.
This one is good, it really does sound like ballroom style which Caretaker likes to sample. There are 2 versions (both on YT, as well as streaming services): original one from 1958 which sounds really compressed and (understandably) lofi, and a rerecording from 1996. The original has 13 tracks and is a bit longer (25 minutes), the 90s one (which is 22 minutes, and has 12 tracks) sounds much better but loses a bit of the charm. One of the only CDs I’ve bought in recent years was a copy of Natalia Lafourcade’s Musas Vol. 2. I got it for 100 pesos from a hawker on Reforma, and I’m still not sold on whether or not it was stolen, but it’s definitely legit, and it’s an incredible album nonetheless. My last selection for Mexico was Lafourcade’s Musas Vol. 1, so this is somewhat a cheat, but I will say Musas Vol. 2 is leagues better than it’s predecessor, and Un Canto Por Mexico Vol. 1 even more so that its. This is the album Mexico’s needed for a long time. In a sense, it’s flawless. It’s a songbook. It’s Gershwin, Cole Porter, Ellington… almost an institution in sorts. There’s something to learn here, and Lafourcade knows it. I’m hoping it gets the proper release it deserves one day, and in the meantime, I anticipate Vol. 2.
Don’t ask me to write about atmospheric black metal, I haven’t a clue what words to use. Sounds like how the cover looks. Much better than my last choice from Moldova.
Noisy power electronica. Pretty heavy, but completely accessible. I wish they mixed it slightly differently (the high-end gets pretty lost), and any male vocals are pretty awful, but there’s still some decent work here. Pattern Obligation is a standout. Iraq's a hard place to cross off.
Remember that time I couldn’t find an Indonesian record? Ha. Ha ha… woops. I’ve listened to plenty since. Dozens of records, usually of fantastic quality. Some tapes, some stream, but mostly records. They’re usually really clean, which is nice. I have a whole bunch on a chart now: Laksa & Phanaeng by Hayden. Keep an eye on the gamelan, but don’t forget the twee scene. This is the recording that Wes Anderson got some of the soundtrack for Moonrise Kingdom from. That England sure does know how to produce a school choir… beautiful stuff. The second side (songs from ‘Friday Afternoons’) is stellar. Most of the compositions are by Benjamin Britten.
Another country I didn’t get around to the first time around. I listened to a handful of releases by Surfvampires late last year, and I can't seem to find anything else from the country, so this is a phone-in. Dreampop/shoegaze (and it's actually fairly good).
Very uniquely tuned keyboard album, moog-ish Sticks in your mind a bit. Don’t ask me where Vol 1 is. Originally I was going to pick an Ethiopian choir album but I’m not sure I can add it to the site because it lacks solid sources, but I can shell a link.
La La’s mix of surfy sophisti-pop, bossa-nova and (what’s essentially) jazz is delicate and bold, and most likely something you’ve seen a local singer-songwriter try and do at somepoint or another and maybe didn’t exactly nail it but at least they tried and maybe a few people clapped or not who knows but at least they heard it unless it was in one ear and out the other which I’m sure it was for some people but it’s their loss really they were just too busy stuffing a quiche in their fat faces and clogging their ears and couldn’t hear a thing and then went on their day and probably didn’t even remember the set my nightfall this isn’t about me that never happened but it definitely happened to someone at somepoint somewhere for somereason anyway this is a good album give it a spin. _________________ Doubles & Conch
Damn this was incredible! Right up my alley. Knew I was in for a treat from the moment I saw the cover and heard the first note. I'm seriously considering putting it in my 2010s chart after 1 listen. VERY atmospheric. I was on a Romanian atmospheric metal rampage a few weeks ago, and this is Moldovan counterpart to those bands I guess.
Lafourcade album is nice too, will have to revisit it at some point.

The Basarabian Hills album is a pretty solid work. That three-track album format (sometimes four) is usually my favourite when it comes to most types of metal. They released an EP in 2016 I wasn't too hot on, but I haven't heard anything else by them yet. Unfortunately, I'm absolutely abysmal when it comes to writing anything regarding metal, but I should reiterate that my comment on the album was meant to be positive. Made a double-take with this one. I couldn’t quite figure it out at first. Is this the Ernesto Cardenal? Like, the poet, priest and politician? The one who used to have odds at the Nobel? Dude had an album? That wasn’t spoken word? In… German??? With a track called Gebet Fur Marilyn Monroe????? Turns out… yes. Yes he did. And it's Krautrock.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It might even be the best album in this post. Borderline a drumcircle, and it sounds like it may have been recorded like one. (I will note the lyrics are religious, but the musicianship is a blast).
There’s a slight chance no other country’s music output has skyrocketed as much in the past four years as Tanzania. There’s always been some recordings here and there sure, some tapes, maybe a dusty 12” longlost in a shop, but there’s been some fantastic and truly unique releases coming out of the country the past few years. Siti Muharam’s whipped up one of them. It’s defined as taarab. Don’t ask for a comparison. Not everything is like something else. Here’s the thing— this is technically a book. It’s in some libraries, and that’s about the only place you’ll be able to get it. Aaand there’s a companion CD in it. I prefer to think of it as a CD with a book companion, but I’m afraid that’s not the case. It’s about as much of a lesson as you’ll ever need for traditional Vietnamese music, and it’s a pretty solid record too. I’d love to give a recommendation to a more accessible record, but if you can dig this out somewhere and get your hands on it, it’s not one to overlook.
Getting some major Sesame Street/ 80s-90s Disney vibes from this. It feels like something that would’ve been given out free with every purchase of a Fijian crib in 1989. It’s also pretty dreamy. Someone’s probably made it into vapourwave by now.

Seen them live recently, kind of. Made a playlist for before/after concert which a friend played cause I had other plans (and he got 3 free beers for that too, cheeky bastard). Watched the rehearsal and the first few songs, went drinking with some friends. Only later did I find out that they're actually a good band, and I probably should've stayed the whole night. I don't think they're a meme, they're just a band like Death Grips for "cool hipster jokesters".
