"What a great surprise! I didn’t have big expectations, since I wasn’t that into their first two albums. But this one, I fell in love with. The balance between the three singers, in both melodies and lyrics, is spot on. They complement each other beautifully. The arrangements are full of surprises...""What a great surprise! They complement each other beautifully. The arrangements are full of surprises and feel genuinely fresh. The only band it sometimes reminds me of is Gentle Giant, mostly because of the recorder parts and the way Tyler Hyde’s voice occasionally echoes Kerry Minnear’s. But really, they stand on their own here. They’ve found a unique sound and fully mastered it on this album. This music really speaks to me. I’m so glad I bought this record and took the time to sit with it. I’m now a fan of Black Country, New Road, something I couldn’t have said before this album."  [+]  Reply

In a highly original way Procol Harum succeeded in combining raw rhythm'n blues with classical music. With Keith Reid's dark mysterious lyrics and Brooker's soulful voice these 1967 recordings sound as attractive and relevant as ever. Their sound is quite unique, and it's hard to mistake these early Procol Harum recordings from any other band's output. Some versions contain all tracks from both the American 11 tracks version and the European 10 tracks release. Actually several tracklistings of the album were released, but the the most important difference was whether they contained "Homburg" or "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Some versions also miss "Good Captain Clack". Other bonus-tracks are the B-side to "A Whiter Shade of Pale", ""Lime Street Blues", a great R&B track. Early versions of songs later to appear on their second album "Shine on Brightly" have also been included. All great and highly interesting. The original version "Magdalene" has only survived from an acetate, so the sound obviously is not as good as could hoped for. Otherwise all tracks sound great. It's very hard to bring forward tracks from the original album, as they all in different ways are of the highest quality. Obviously their to early hit-singles stand out, but in the same vein you'll find outstanding songs like "Salad Days" and "Repent Walpurgis". The bluesier side of the band is shown on tracks like "Something Following Me" and "Cerdes", but even these two have the classical "PH" feel to them. Among the up-beat tracks "Conquistador" and "Kaleidoscope" are the closest you get straight-forward rock-music. "Mabel" and "Good Captain Clack" are Procol Harum at their most unceremonious. Some moshes didn't work but when they did, like on "Helter Skelter" it brought the RAWK in a way you never though the beatles or any rap song could. DJ Dangermouse brings out the darkness of cee-lo's lyrics despite his exuberantly happy delivery. Not only did they bring 2006's rap-pop anthem "crazy" but put some funky steps to the Violent Femmes "Gone Daddy Gone" along with an album that'll make you feel the "Feng Shui"."  [+]  Reply

When I compared the first half of Donovan’s double LP as being some of the best folk rock EVER released. As good as The Byrd’s Mr. Tamborine Man. As good as Love’s Forever Changes. I meant it. I really did. I LOVE those ten songs with all my heart. But, you know what? The second half is even better! It’s just completely different. Gone are the catchy fun sing-a-long pop songs. Instead Donovan delves into something mystical. Something enchanted. It casts a spell transporting you to a small fishing village on the craggy shore from a long, long time ago. From a land & culture that is no more and has been lost. When elves still had power and fairies ruled the woods. These are sea songs for a shire. It’s a bewitching listen when life was simple and better for it. When life was still tied to the land and the tides dictated chores. Not time. Not clocks. It’s as if Donovan feels not just born in the wrong decade, but the wrong era altogether. And the spell he casts with both the music & lyrics is seamless. Nothing breaks it. You can actually smell the salt of the sea. Feel the spray of the ocean mist. Nothing reminds you that these songs were written in the sixties. Because these songs don’t even know that radio exists. Grade: A+. Simply one of the greatest double albums of all time. I would put this up against anything in the rock canon. Anything. That means you The White Album. That means you Blonde on Blonde. And Donovan shoots back to number one where he belongs."  [+]  Reply
