I frequently go on black/death metal kicks but this is by far the singular most oppressive thing I've ever heard. it's painful to listen to and makes me genuinely sick, makes my muscles ache. I feel like I need a massage and shower after listening to this, it just tenses me up so much. the guitars are used solely to create ugly noises and the percussion is pounding, usually slow, and always brutal. every hit on the drums is powerful and violent. the vocals are tortured and only serve to repeat misanthropic, pessimistic, condemning mantras until they sink in. there's an art here in how "melodies," almost without melody, are displayed, using those ugly guitar noises and syncopated to a point where at first it sounds off, but matches the vocals/lyrics perfectly well with how broken it is. incredibly original. it might take a couple listens b4 you hear anything at all more than what sounds like random noise, but trust me it's only b/c you never heard "riffs" like this. you want the true effects, blast it with loudspeakers and a subwoofer, it's worth the minor, temporary ear damage. this isn't supposed to be pleasant. Gira is an absolute genius, that's a fact."  [+]  Reply

Misery is the river of the world, God's away on business, everything goes to hell, and, starving in the belly of the whale, are all excellent tracks, Tom Waits at his mad best. There's some beautiful tracks here too with, Coney island baby, and, all the world is Green, both lovely. Another man's vine, is a great bluesy soul track, and, a good man is hard to find, is a great ending to the album. I have to admit that, lullaby, and, the part you throw away, are usual Tom Waits filler, songs he could probably write in his sleep. At least three quarters of this album is classic Waits. It's a masterpiece depicting the light at the end of the tunnel. Banquet is phenomenal, "Some get the gravy And some get the gristle Some get the marrow bone And some get nothing Though there's plenty to spare". A line that sums up humanity like no other I can think of. Joni was always pressured to create "hits", when deep inside she had more pure emotions to emit through her work. This album showcases it like no other in her collection. Her piano work here is beyond amazing, probably amongst the best pianist work of the 20th Century. It is so depressing how over looked this fact is alone, in addition to her more commercial albums overshadowing it. This is as real as you can get folks, an album like no other. I used to listen to her entire collection with love, but now because "For The Roses" set my standards so high, I can no longer. "Lesson In Survival/Let The Wind Carry Me" is just pure ecstasy. So raw, beautiful, deep, and real. "Ludwig's Tune", hence the name is a homage to Beethoven like no other. "Condemned to wires and hammers Strike every chord that you feel That broken trees And elephant ivories conceal" By passing up this album, you are dismissing music at it's very best. You must give this album a try, even if it is not on par to your standards at first listen. That is the true sign of advanced music, it must soak in. You will not regret the investment in multiple listenings, this is a life changer. "  [+]  Reply

In my opinion, as great a record as this record is, his follow-up, 'Doc At The Radar Station', is even better. This album is a kind of distillation of 'Trout Mask' for the post-punk generation. It is a record in which the Captain controlled many of the excesses of the former, but nevertheless lost none of his ascerbic wit and visceral brilliance. It's a though the master was purposely playing his post-punk students at their own game while simultaneously maintaining a respectful creative distance. Although the Captain had laid the template for the next generation a decade before, many uninformed observers might reasonably be mistaken for believing that with 'Doc', he was an immitator rather than an innovator.
