If new porn leans to any identity, they lean to a.c. newman, and the same dynamic works for monsters of folk too as jim james, m.ward, conor oberst and his mogis producer combine for some old-school, pop/rock/folk that for the most part leans towards the vision of oberst/mogis except for the otherworldly opener "dear god (sincerely m.o.f.)". This combination clicks almost all the time, from plaintive lead single "say please" and it's strong harmonies to the stop-start "oohm bop" of "losin' yo head" to the country bar flavor of "the right place", only losing a little steam in an oberst-sung "temazcal". Often these projects turn out to be vanity projects like chickenfoot or that foo/floyd/queens group (as 2009 examples). But this one works because it sounds like all 4 members really put a lot of thought, feeling and creativity into this collaborative effort. Monsters of folk indeed."[+]Reply

The guy just uses a computer and music samples from a wide array of pop to create new song (mixes). (i guess there are a few drum fills.) Then there's the choice of samples, here theres a bunch of 90s/00s hip hop with 70s/80s pop. There are the mixes themselves, like when Gillis mixes notorious big with elton john's "tiny dancer" or mixing the "i love you" part of "silly love songs" against 2 live crew's chorus to "we want some pussy" (!). Some of those mixes are quite inspired. Then there's discussion as to the definition of songs, why they exist and if this would've simply've been best served as one long party jam a la prince's lovesexy. Then there's discussion as to liking this music is more being fond of the underlying samples and reminiscing on the underlying music, as opposed to attributing worth to the end result. Then there's dicussion about how much talent it takes to weave these jams. You don't need to know how to play an (traditional) instrument or sing. You need some good software, good talent for that software, and a very good ear. (i tried making my own mixes unsucessfully, inspired by girl talk -- it's not easy!) Is the sum of the parts a collage of the parts are a brand new whole? These are a lot of topics to wade through to determine how much i like this album compared to the "typical album". It's party music. It's time capsule music. It's a dj mix. It's an amalgam of different pop styles that create a new pop style/genre. But most of all it's fun, and in those rare times the mixes aren't that good, they're over in seconds. This is the music of the mp3 generation -- take that as you will."[+]Reply
"Something For Kate will be remembered if only for 'Monsters' from this album. But the album has a lot to offer and was one album I listened to constantly after its intial release. My all-time favourite Aus album."Reply

"An absolutely stunning album from electroacoustic pioneer Iannis Xenakis. Incredibly immersive, and once it's got you hypnotised there's absolutely no escape from its spine-chilling sonic landscapes."Reply
"An album that take its time and space. Even though the arpeggios and the circular harmonies are overused, there's beautiful dynamics and choirs to balance it out."Reply

Half of the album is classic blues-rock style - solid but without very much personal character.
The rest of the album is more searching - at times almost psychedlia. This is where the group is most interesting, and although Miller's songwriting is yet at his top level, the three opening numbers are actually quite good and successful. In fact the two short songs "Pushed me too Far "and" You've Got the Power "can be regarded as appendix to the opening song" Children of the Future ". All songs of the original vinyl side 1, are bound together and the songs do not really work outside that context.
The second half is mostly blues and these numbers are also in several cases tied together. The bluesy songs, though, but may well be heard separately. Most powerful among these, I find Boz Scaggs' "Steppin Stone" and Miller's own "Roll With it""[+]Reply
"I can´t believe this album is so low. The best hardcore that The Offspring could offer. Really underrated. Best tracks: Kick him when he´s down - We are one - Dirty Magic - No Hero - Get it right"Reply
