Ruthie Foster brings her combination of blues, soul and gospel to a mass audience on her 5th LP. She delivers her soulful take on this collection of tunes showing she is adept at whatever style of music she attempts. Her voice is candid and heartfelt, sounding like Carla Thomas, Gladys Knight of the 50's and 60's. She also displays fine keyboard skills on her Wurlitzer organ. while not completely representative of the work here - check out the phenomenal woman title track written by Dr. Maya Angelou, which is indeed, PHENOMENAL!
Edit: The highlight of the album though is Foster's a cappella cover of Son House's blues standard "People Grinnin' In Your Face".
