Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.6/100, a mean average of 70.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 70.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.1.

On their debut album, Biffy Clyro establishes a sound somewhere between post-Nirvana grunge and golden era-Red Hot Chili Peppers funk. The music is dark and rhythmic, with explosive choruses and mature lyrics. Today it sounds like a typical early 2000s post-grunge record and consequently, it doesn't feel very original.
The shifts in tempo and style make this record feel alive, but also makes it somewhat incoherent. The strongest parts of the record are the more melodic and vulnerable sides hidden beneath all those grungy layers of darkness on tracks like "Hero Management" and "Christopher's River". "Joy.Discovery.Invention" and "Justboy" are the biggest standouts in terms of the more post-grunge oriented songs. The more experimental tracks, such as "Kill The Old, Torture Their Young", don't really do it for me, while the singles are perfectly passable. Overall, the band shows great confidence in their sound and subject matters, which is always great on a debut album.

Love the sound of this record so much. It has brilliant songwriting, their best vocals to date and killer guitars. A couple of mediocre songs at the end don't bring it down that much cause you always have 57, Kill The Old, Torture Their Young, Joy. Discovery. Invention, Christopher's River and other fantastic tunes.

My god... This album it's truly a really great debut album, and yet it is so overlooked... Despite being a guy that really hates Post-Hardcore and screams, I really love this record... Biffy is a special case, even though in this album they only ocassionally fall on the use of those screams (and even when they scream, it sounds great).

If I don't give this record a perfect rating it's just because, being their debut, you can really notice at points that they are not that experimented on their instruments, and composing... sometimes the songs have messy structures... also some songs are difficult to get into at first, but they're very rewarding. Not their best, but still amazing!

Best Track(s): Kill the Old, Torture their young / Convex, Concave
Worst Track(s): Scary Mary
