I saw the Gourds play at my favorite music festival--the Albino Skunk Music Festival in Greer, South Carolina--back in 2009. These guys were a perfect fit for that festival, as their laid-back country-bumpkin style, combined with impeccable songwriting and strong musicianship, quintessentially captures the spirit of the event. The songs on this album, the band's first featuring former Uncle Tupelo and Wilco utility player Max Johnston on fiddle and banjo, shine like a crescent moon through the boughs of a lonesome juniper tree. The ramshackle dobro on "El Paso" is a representative sample of what makes this album so fun and invigorating.

The fourth album released by the Austin greats. Not one of my favorites, a bit disappointing even, but with a few nice tracks. With 15 of them it's a tad long. My favorite track here is the 7 minute closer, "High Highs & Low Lows."
