Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. This is easily one of the best debuts ever, even if it's a little scattered in its vision. Like most Drive-By Truckers fans, I was bummed to hear Isbell was leaving. But I was also excited to see what he would do, since his contributions to the band had been so spectacular. What we got was a lot of different kinds of songs, all roughly alt-country. There are some moments that are more straight-ahead rock, and I personally find those to be the weakest tracks. But there are also some tracks that showcase his skill as a narrative songwriter. As Isbell continues his meteoric rise as a solo artist, I think new fans will be surprised when they go back to his first record and discover it's this good.
