This is easily one of the best debuts ever, even if it's a little scattered in its vision. Like most Drive-By Truckers fans, I was bummed to hear Isbell was leaving. But I was also excited to see what he would do, since his contributions to the band had been so spectacular. What we got was a lot of different kinds of songs, all roughly alt-country. There are some moments that are more straight-ahead rock, and I personally find those to be the weakest tracks. But there are also some tracks that showcase his skill as a narrative songwriter. As Isbell continues his meteoric rise as a solo artist, I think new fans will be surprised when they go back to his first record and discover it's this good.
