Whilst it isn’t “the best” nor is it “the greatest” Australian album of all time, Archie Roach’s ‘Charcoal Lane’ is undoubtedly one of the most important by its shining a light on The Stolen Generation which represented Australia’s shameful policy whereby indigenous children were forcibly removed from their clan and land to be assimilated into white families (“Took the Children Away”). The album also addresses first hand accounts of indigenous incarceration (“Munjana”) , alcoholism (“Charcoal Lane”), homelessness (“Down City Streets”) and land rights / treaty (“Native Born”)

This album should be a compulsory subject in all Australian primary schools
