Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Grand Funk was well beyond peak popularity when they released this in 1976, but it is far and away my favorite from the group. Not a single skippable cut and most are at least excellent including a couple that are their finest songs ever. Production and some instrumental help by Frank Zappa elevate this one even further.
Good Singin' Good Playin' was not one of my favorite GFR albums back in the 70's. Over the years this album has grown on me considerably and actually became a top three GFR album.
