Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.2/100, a mean average of 69.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.8.

A true return to form after a large number of albums which were OK but only just that. This one has more to offer and sounds as dangerous as the best of their first album.

Well, I for one haven’t forgotten the Pixies and never will and am surprisingly digging this album which is easily their best suit of originals since ‘Trompe le Monde’ waaaaay back in 1991. Mind you, the bar had been set extremely low since that release with a trio of stinkers beginning with ‘Indie Cindy’ (2014) and ending with 2019’s ‘Beneath the Eyrie’ but lets not take anything away from ‘Doggerel’, its got plenty to offer. My biggest complaints with their previous three albums was how tame (pun intended) they were. Forget slicing up eyeballs more like slicing up cucumbers, but here the attitudes back along with the weirdness, fun, sexual innuendos, spoken lyrics, quiet / loud and great guitar licks. Hell there’s even a 12 caret gold standard track that sits amongst their finest tunes EVER and of course I’m referring to the incredible “There’s A Moon On”
But it does have its flaws which begin and end with Joeys song writing debut on his “Dregs of the Wine” and even worse track “Pagen Man”. Don’t leave your day job Joey. And the strangely tacked onto the end title track “Doggerel” oddly feels out of place
Where is my mind?

Way out in the water it’s saying ‘Doggerel’ goes alright

To think that one of the greatest band of the last 40 years release an album in 2022 and nobody cares for it... (Doggerel is ranked 184th in 2022, only 20 users give it a rating... and a rather average rating at that...) It's really painful to see... How can the mighty Pixies sink into oblivion like that ?
Doggerel might not be one of their finest album, but it certainly have its merits. The first song "Nomatterday" is a banger. The next two are kind of a let down tough... "Vault of heaven" and "Dregs of the wine" were probably meant to be among the best songs on here, but unfortunately it's not ; They are just too generic and I tend to just skip them. "Haunted house" is very nice ; later days Pixies tend to be better at writing those simple, pretty and melodic songs. But the album really takes off in the second half, from "Thunder and lightning" on to the last, it's all good. The "Trompe-le-monde-esque" "You're such a sadducee" and the title track (probably the best on here) are perfectly closing the album, with once again amazing guitar from Joey.
