Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 5% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.2/100, a mean average of 76.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.6.

Like someone else has written, this is a great follow up to Operation: Mindcrime. Production wise, it is much slicker and the songs considerably for accessible. Unlike Mindcrime, these days I tend to listen to 5 or 6 songs rather than the whole album as it is very long, way to long for my waning attention span!

great hard rock/metal album. almost all the songs are good.
Mindcrime is my favorite by Queensryche (and one of my all time favorites as well), Empire is very different than Mindcrime - cleaner, not as intense, and has a luxurious feel to it.

The follow up to the successful, operation:mindcrime, album. Empire, dispenses with the concept of it's predecessor and goes for an individual song format. Some excellent tunes here with the best being the Pink Floyd-ish, silent lucidity, a brilliant song and probably Queensryche's best. A good album.

Very good hard rock/progressive metal album. Best 10 songs average is 91,2/100, the album gets 90/100. It's continuously strong without any lows. Far and away best song is "Silent lucidity" I'm rating at a max. Followed by "Best I can", "The thin line", "Another rainy night (without you)", "Empire" and "Anybody listening?" all 90/100. All (!!) other songs 85/100.

Empire is well-produced and has a great variety of songs with a vocalist similar to Steve Perry and great rhythms, but this album is nothing compared to the beauty of Operation: Mindcrime.

Silent Lucidity got all the publicity, but that might be my least favorite track on the album. Anybody Listening, Jet City Woman, and Another Rainy Night (Without You) are progressive metal classics. This album provided a smart alternative to the hair metal scene of the late 80s.
