Operation Mindcrime is an underrated classic. Empire is pretty great too. Both are essential for any rock fan. However, for as much material as they've put out, there are far too many misses to put them on par with some of their peers.

This band has put out some excellent albums. It's unfortunate what this band has come to with its feud with Geoff Tate. The essential I would say are Queensryche (the debut), Operation Mindcrime, and Empire.
Operation Mindcrime and Empire are classics. The rest of their stuff has been pretty hit or miss for me.
Queensryche has put out some good stuff through the years and a few albums that I didn't like very much. They are great players and Tate is a great vocalist. Mindcrime was an awesome album and Empire and early things like Rage for Order were quite good. Their later stuff hasn't been as impressive to me.
The "MTV Unplugged" versions of their songs (The Killing Words, Della Brown, Lady Wore Black, Silent Lucidity,...) are fantastic, IMO much better than studio versions (at least from what I have heard).. Too bad that it wasn't released (like for example Nirvana's Unplugged in NY)... Geoff Tate is a great vocalist.
