Melancholy bliss but with some oomph. One of the better albums from them. Kicks off well, couple of tracks in the middle dip a bit but it finishes with one of the best songs they've written (Touch Me I'm Going To Scream, Part 2). I've got American Dad to thank for introducing me to them.

I'll be the first to concede that Evil Urges is something of a mishmash of ideas, definitely not the unified rock and roll masterpiece one might have expected after Z and the wonderful live album Okonokos. Jim James experiments here with grating falsetto, rootsy New Age romanticism, and jammy funk, and critics and hardcore fans were nonplussed. As far as I'm concerned, though, a lot of the ideas here, disparate though they may be, are good ones. And even if they weren't, "I'm Amazed" is so tightly written, deeply moving, and complicatedly ambiguous that it alone could carry an album full of tracks much weaker than these. In fact, I think it's a contender for best song of the 2000s--along with Sufjan Stevens' "Casimir Pulaski Day" and Neko Case's "Deep Red Bells"--a song that rewards with its incredulity at our capacity for carelessness, ambivalence, and apathy.
Super diverse album. I think it's their best.
By far the most underrated album I have seen on this site to date. My Morning Jacket can be appreciated by people who are fans of multiple genres.
I'm not a big fan of American Dad, but when I found out they dedicated an entire episode to MMJ I had to find it. If you like the show find that episode and see what you think of their music. If you like their music you will love this episode. S5 Ep 7.
Favorite tracks from this album are Evil Urges, I'm Amazed, Thank You Too, and Touch me I'm going to Scream pt2. I don't know why Good Intentions can be considered a track. It is 5 seconds long.
