This album is a curious artifact of its time, which is often confused with the work of its more famous namesake. We are talking about MC Jazzy Jeff, not DJ Jazzy Jeff from a duet with Will Smith.
The real name of the performer is Jeffrey Miree. He was born on July 7, 1962, in New York City, and was a member of the legendary hip-hop group Funky 4 + 1, one of the first to perform on national television (SNL) in 1981.
This is the only solo album by MC Jazzy Jeff. He adopted the pseudonym before the more well-known DJ Jeffrey Townes (DJ Jazzy Jeff). Because of this, in 1994, MC Jazzy Jeff even won a lawsuit for the right to use this name.
The album stood out from other rap releases of the mid-80s with its smart, thoughtful lyrics, without excessive bravado and machismo. The single "King Heroin" with a social message against drugs even became a moderate hit.
His second album was fully recorded in 1987, but Jive Records never released it, perhaps opting for the more commercially successful duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.
This release remains the only full-length evidence of MC Jazzy Jeff's solo work, and it is now sought after by collectors as a rare example of early intellectual hip-hop.
