The Stanley Brothers made leaps and bounds combining old Appalachian folk songs with clever and thoughtful originals, which provided the framework for bluegrass and Mountain music for decades to come.

Ralph's distinct high tenor singing and banjo playing is of note here, but Carter Stanley is the driving force of this ensemble. His high and mournful singing set the standard for many singers of country and old-time music that look for a real sense of identity in their singing. His songwriting is beautiful Appalachian poetry that is so simple that you would think it was just written down carelessly, but in truth the beauty is in its simplicity and raw honesty.

The Stanley Brothers really came into their own on these Mercury recordings from the 1950s. The brothers along with their musicians played in a tight ensemble that would be influential for years and years to come.

Essential. I recommend the Complete Mercury Recordings release from 2002.
