Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.1/100, a mean average of 69.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 70.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.9.

Switchfoot’s best album very surprisingly didn’t take off especially when you consider that Stars was the hit lead single.

I guess it didn’t help that We Are One Tonight was the only other single from the album and was a very weak choice for a second single when it could’ve been easily either Easier Than Love, The Blues or The Setting Sun (all which would’ve been way better choices for a second single to lead off from the success of Stars).

That and the band was trapped at a destination whether they wanted to a mainstream rock act or a good Christian Rock band and had to convince their newfound audience of what they were. They had to ask themselves if they were willing to play the pop game and sell-out their Christian values a little bit after their newfound success with The Beautiful Letdown to further boost up their popularity and record sales (which they weren’t interested in doing), or were they willing to cater completely to the CCM market (which they obviously didn’t want to do either).

The answer we got was a very confused, cynical and spiritual record that while very mainstream-sounding…didn’t really stand out much compared to everything else that came out at the time and it probably alienated a lot of people who liked Switchfoot back in the Early-To-Mid-2000’s and forced them to become the Jars Of Clay of the 2000’s. CCM fans now saw the band as too mainstream to be Christian while the mainstream saw Switchfoot as too spiritual, Christian and preachy for the mainstream music scene.

The songwriting, the guitar work and the drum work is much better done here on NIS than TBL. The songs are much deeper (and catchier) and Jon Foreman’s vocals really bring you emotion when you listen to him sing on this record. It really makes me miss how musically good this band use to be back in the 2000’s.

This is my favorite Switchfoot album. Best tracks: Stars, The Blues, Golden, Daisy, Shadow Proves the Sunshine. The songwriting is great. I'd say that Switchfoot began to outpace their heroes U2 with the release of this album.

This is a good album from Switchfoot. It's probably their darkest album and I like it. Daisy has to be one of their best songs ever. I'd place this album 1st or 2nd in the Switchfoot discography (I'm hesitating with Oh Gravity).

Some of the songwriting on here is absolutely great even if their lyrics are in this weird wanna-be spiritual/philosophical "we're not a christian band but actually all of our record sales come from the CCM market" so the lyrics oscillate between thoughtful and outright laughable.

"The blues" is probably the best song Jon Foreman has written, and I actually like the guitar work on "happy is a yuppie word" despite the fact that the song is titled "happy is a yuppie word" and contains the lyrics "happy is a yuppie word"

I listened to this a ton in middle/high school when I was only allowed christian music, and it is very interesting to see which songs hold up vs. which ones I roll my eyes at.

The Beautiful Letdown is good, but I always loved this one more.
