A rock album inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes. Remarkable.

Johnny Cash was already a legend but the American project brought him to a new level. Thanks Rick Rubin. American I and II were already a huge accomplishment but American III and IV gave were recorded after Cash's health began to decline and so they were something else entirely. They helped the world see the beauty of someone elderly and mortal. American III and IV are a testimony to Cash but also to human dignity. Bowie's Dark Star and Leonard Cohen's You Want it Darker are spiritual descendants to American III and IV.

LC comes out of retirement and delivers one of his greatest albums. This was the album that really launched his 21st century run as the rabbi of rock.

Red Dirt Girl is not quite at the level of Wrecking Ball but it's very good and deserves to come out of the shadow of WB. I see it as a little more in Emmylou's usual vein but under the influence of what she did on Wrecking Ball. Dave Matthews makes a memorable, and pretty great, guest appearance.

Belle and Sebastian take a little bit more of a straightforward pop turn on this record but it works really well and does not at all feel phony. They are truly one of the greatest bands of the 90s and 00s.

Soulful pop from the master of her own genre. This album has all the great Annie sounds with really deep themes of grief and loss and seeking transcendent meaning. A sign of a great album is that you want to hear it again and again. That's this album. After one listen, I couldn't wait for the next!
