Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.2/100, a mean average of 71.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.9.

New Radicals' only release, this was songwriter Gregg Alexander's passion project, following two unsuccessful and overlooked albums in 1989 and 1992. A dramatic departure from the darker sound of his first two records, it features a radio friendly alternative rock and pop sound, and managed to spawn a huge international hit in You Get What You Give. The album's musical style has been compared to artists like The Smashing Pumpkins and The Rolling Stones, with the album projecting a bright, optimistic, upbeat sound.

Similarly to Kanye West's The College Dropout and Moby's Play, this was Gregg Alexander's make it or break it moment, as studios and session musicians offered to help him with his vision, which sounded ahead of its time, as Alexander showcased his enlightened thoughts about the commercialisation of western society, the media and religion through huge-sounding pop rock anthems that still resonate to this day, all while showcasing his humour and powerful vocal range and timbre.

One hit wonder? "Someday We'll Know" reached # 48 in the UK! # 48!! And I won't mention all the hits he subsequently wrote and produced for other people. Mostly because they were shit. But This WAS a great record.

A very cohesive album with a soulful positive vibe. Combines great production with strong songwriting. A congenial and highly melodic throwback to the rock and blue-eyed soul of the 1970's. Catchy and infectious; dipping into several genres for inspiration. This is brilliant all the way through.

If "You Get What You Give" isn't the best song Mick Jagger wishes he wrote, I don't know what is. Outstanding songwriting, and the music is only about a half-step behind. People love to crack wise on this, but whatever. This was one of the better albums of the 90s and an album that was essential in my late high school years. If you enjoy Primal Scream's Screamadelica and somehow haven't heard of this album, do yourself a favor and download it.
