Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. A much-underappreciated album by eleven-piece Portland outfit Typhoon. Heavily influenced by frontman Kyle Morton's childhood experiences with Lyme disease (which almost killed him), this album shimmers with poignancy and lingers in death's cold shadow. The horns, strings, and electronics bring these songs to spectacular heights.
This is a cool find. A little sad, but at the same time endlessly hopeful.
Great album
A bit of a consistency issue and the production is a too samey throughout.
