Bitter Rivals has largely gotten about the same treatment as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Mosquito, in that it's an album by a formerly cool band that most listeners and critics found vastly inferior. While I agree that this album doesn't quite rise to the high standard set by Treats and Reign of Terror, it's still a very fine album, just not quite as consistent. The title track is excellent, quintessential Sleigh Bells, with its catchy, even mesmerizing refrain: "You are my bitter rival / But I need you for survival." I'll admit that I myself don't feel like I need rivals for survival, but I know plenty of people who do.
It's been all downhill for Sleigh Bells since Treats, making this their stalest effort so far. There are no risks, just badly cliched lyrics and uninteresting songwriting.
