Kristin Hersh is a treasure, and I've admired her for the better part of three decades, dating back even before she was doing literally haunting duets with Michael Stipe back in the early nineties. So it's easy to understand my excitement when I heard she'd reformed Throwing Muses and was recording a new album. Turns out the results are a little uneven; Purgatory/Paradise is probably overlong, and Hersh's vocals don't quite have the penetrating bite they had when she was in her twenties and thirties. Nevertheless, it's incredibly refreshing to have something new from her and her band, here's hoping she continues adding to her impressive discography.
