Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Why is she suddenly British?
Not a total disaster, but will.i.am does take a massive dump on this one. Opening tracks "Alien" and "Work Bitch" (along with a handful of ballads near the end) leave relatively unscathed, but the rest is an EDM-inflected mess, although I have to admit "Til It's Gone" is my favourite track here. A mixed bag, leaning towards bad but not quite there.
One of her worst albums (I blame will.i.am for this travesty), but it's not without its merits. Tracks like "Alien" and "Passenger" are strange slices of pop that work. Others such as the awful "Tik Tik Boom" & "Chillin With You" and the inane "It Should Be Easy" & "Body Ache" don't work. At all.
The deluxe tracks, especially the great "Hold On Tight", show that this album could've easily gone down a far greater path, but instead chose to fill the album with a lot of awful dance tracks. Not good. (BTW, "The Dreaming Mix" is so much better than the version of Perfume on the standard edition).
Bad. No need to explain more......
