Canadian singer-songwriter Basia Bulat has a big voice, and when her material matches up to the voice with which she delivers it, the results can be stunning. One of the places on Tall Tall Shadow where this occurs is on the title track, which begins with Bulat on electric piano, and the shadow of a folk tune in the song. As the chorus builds you realize you’re hearing something like the quietly epic nature of Tapestry-era Carole King, minted new, fresh and from a different perspective. In fact, I think I'd wager that I like Basia Bulat better than I like Carole King, though that might be more of a generational thing.
