Comment For 1991 Unplugged Tracks:
R.E.M's 'Out Of Time' was released March 12th 1991 so it's unsurprising that when the group + Peter Holsapple appeared on MTV Unplugged 1 month later this album would feature heavily with "Half a World Away" , "Radio Song" , "Low" , "Belong" , "Losing My Religion" and "Endgame" ( as the credits roll ) and going to air , plus "Fretless" from the Out Of Time sessions on the expanded album
Disappointingly some of the better tracks on 'Out Of Time' did not make on to the 1991 unplugged set list and I'm referring to "Near Wild Heaven " , "Country Feedback " (which would make a 2001 unplugged appearance ) and "Me In Honey" . The none inclusion of "Shiny Happy People" and "Texarkana" speaks for itself
The 1991 set oddly includes 2 left field inclusions in The Troggs "Love Is All Around" with Mike Mills on vocals and "Rotary 11" an instrumental follow up to "Rotary 10" which can be heard on the 'Dead Letter Office Compilation'
'Green ' gets 3 tracks in "Pop Song 89" , "Get Up" and "World Leader Pretend" , 'Document' 2 tracks in "Disturbance At The Heron House" and "It's the End Of the World.." , 'Life's Rich Pagent' also gets 2 tracks in "Fall On Me" and "Swan Swan Hummingbird" whilst only "Perfect Circle" appears from 'Murmur'
The performance itself is fairly tight but there are some interesting notes:
"Radio Song": Stipe stuff's up the lyrics and proclaims "Woops"
"Belong": Stipe can be seen reading from a lyrics sheet
"Losing My Religion": Stipe introduces the track as "About You" and points to the audience
"Perfect Circle": is dedicated to a friend to keep fighting
"Fall On Me": Stipe introduces it as his favourite song in the R.E.M catalogue
"Its The End Of The World..": Stipe states negatively it was was an MTV request , and Mike Mills can be heard in the background proclaiming "Not Those Guys Again "
The 1991 Unplugged concert stands as a beautiful pillar to a band at the top of their powers and reminds us when this MTV Unplugged stuff was really really hugely popular
