Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. It's hard not to hold Thom to a higher standard since his past works have been so significant, but this album just isn't changing the game the way he used to. It was exciting each time Radiohead changed their sound, but now Thom seems to have developed an affection for this cold, distant, sterile electronic music. If this is the kind of music he wants to make, then that's great for him. He's definitely good at it. But what makes this album stand out among anything else he's done? The songs are nice, but they just don't seem to be showcasing the creativity we all know he is capable of. Obviously people enjoy this album, I do too to an extent, but I honestly don't believe it will have the same lasting power of his other work.
It took a few listens, but this thing has really grown on me. I'd now say it's better than the Eraser.
The only weak point is There's No Ice. It's a merely tolerable bit in an album of beautiful sound

It has it's good moments, but for me it lags behind "The Eraser" by far

It's just another kickass album. Definitely better than The Eraser, in my opinion.

Thom's electronic/experimental side is generally very creatively satisfying and a pleasure to immerse yourself in. Throw some good headphones on and I could listen to Amok, The Eraser, and The King of Limbs all day, listening to the intricacies, layers, percussion, disembodied melodies etc. So it is only fair that I objectively criticise an album that hasn't reached those lofty standards. Modern Boxes lacks the vision of Eraser, the cohesive layerings of Amok, and the variety of TKoLs. There are four very good tracks that hold the album together but as a whole it has a lacklustre mood that permeates each song. It's a 70/100 only because Brain in a Bottle, Guess Again, Mother Lode and Nose Grows Some are all rewarding on multiple listens. The atmospheric tracks are a bit dull for mine.
