Neko Case's debut album is by far her most straightforwardly country release. Like every album she's made thus far, it is excellent. But it doesn't quite have the melodic maturity or lyrical dexterity of some of her albums that have come since, especially Blacklisted and Fox Confesssor Brings the Flood. It does contain the only genuinely bad song in Case's catalog, the obnoxious "Honkytonk Hiccups." But this is a forgivable, even endearing, misstep, considering how many truly excellent songs she's written and recorded, including "Jettison," probably the best track on this album. A fine preview of what was to come.
