This was my introduction to the Avett Brothers. Solid album or some very catchy tunes.
Great fun. Great musically and lyrically. Sometimes a bit sentimental!

The Avett Brothers are very unknown. It's ridiculous that this album barely made the top 2000. :(
I have a very interesting relationship with this album, some days I absolutely love it and enjoy every second of the content on this album. Then there will be days where I put it in and instanly want to put something else on. I think it might have to do something with the tone the brothers bring by switching off for lead vocals every other song, but otherwise I'm not entirely sure why my feelings for this album are so sporadic. I And Love And You is definitely worth a lesson: the title track is absolutely beautiful, and makes for a perfect opener, Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise, January Wedding, and And It Spread are also highlights. I'm also going to say that It Goes On And On is proabably my favorite Avett Brothers song, very good stuff even if it doesn't always feel that consistent.

This time around they come with crisper production and a few heightened gimmicks. Fortunately for them, all the gimmicks work, starting with the title track, "I and love and you", the love-song-by-addition which reflects the popular i-heart-NY t-shirt directed specifically at brooklyn. It's the ballad brother to ryan adams's "new york, new york". The other gimmicky songs are just as good. "kick drum heart" simulates the singer's love through a kick drum at the chorus. "slight figure of speech" has a stop-start quality and energy that recalls ben folds's playfulness abruptly jumping into a white-boy-"rap" at the bridge. This is probably the avett brothers at their peak -- enjoy.
