Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 6% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.5/100, a mean average of 76.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.1.

Like others, not quite sure how I missed this one from 1990. First listen in 2022 and loving it!

An all-time great album from this semi-Paisley Underground group. Guitarist Jim Mankey and Bassist/singer Johnette Napolitano crafted a superb, slimy slice of the L.A. after dark scene. I would guess 90% of all BEA users have heard the toxic abuse survival tale "Joey". It is a highlight here - but the album is filled with equally strong, dark, riveting tunes like "Tomorrow Wendy" and the title cut. Add to those the rest of the album and you've got yourself an all-time classic. A sadly overlooked band.

Perfectly fine but not nearly as interesting as the first few tracks would have you believe.

A rare album that manages to be gloomy and morose while rocking at the same time. Johnette's bass dominates the sound of most of the songs, and the heavy, pounding opening track sets a great mood for the whole album.

Tomorrow, Wendy is one of the best songs of all time - along with one of the greatest lines ever written: "I told the priest, Don't count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked the first time he came down here slumming"

Where has this been all my life? This is an album that is worth it for the first track alone. “Bloodletting” is a bluesy voodoo groove that sets the tone for this album perfectly. The sinister groove within this song makes its way through the remainder of the album, coloring everything in its dense shadow. I love the voice on this album. I love the music. I love the lyrics. I honestly cannot believe that I haven’t been listening to this one on a regular basis for the past twenty-plus years. I remember hearing “Joey” back then, but other than that, this was a completely new experience for me. And there’s not a bad song on it. My favorites are the aforementioned “Bloodletting” as well as “The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden” and “Caroline.” I can’t say enough about how pleasantly surprised I was by this album, so I guess I won’t say anymore.
