Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 86.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 17.0.

Wow what an interesting list. Lots of great avant garde stuff on here. Trout Mask as #1 is certainly a statement haha.

For the 228th time, your descriptions are something to B-hold. Yet it isn't working for me this time. Idk wydm 'no surprises'?. I only see the album as super-annoying apocalyptic chaos, not anything more. Simultaneously, for me it HAS to have some sort of enjoyability to work proper. The 90s answer to Trout Mask Replica? Not even a remotely decent chance [Beefheart has genius humor, unbelievable vocal range and exceptional talent]. The different experiences between other experimental/dangerous/hypnotic/brutally dark bodies of work, and Twin Infinitives is that I don't get inspiration nor chills down my spine with the latter (whether'd be chills of terror, depression, existentialism, anger etc).
Not sure how much longer talking about Royal Trux's "expressive non-annoyance, unique tension" can hold my interest though. ;-)

Too many more listens is doing my convenience injustice lol.

My theory is good drugs help make good music, bad drugs help make bad music.......okay maybe that was rude (and kiiind of untrue), but we ain't gonna love every single experimental/good/enjoyable album that crosses our paths.

All aside, out of those musicians you unconsciously inspired me to check out/revisit (such as Tim, Beefheart, Wyatt, early PF, RHP debut, Type O, Suicide), Tim Buckley, hands down, has been the most impactful and overwhelming of them all. His amazing music has redefined a lot of what I think of psychedelic music and folktunes, alongside otherwordly singing. Thank you .Fun fact: I wrote this a few hours after I got delivered an original 1970 pressing of Lorca. What a timing. I can die happy xD

This is by any fronts the chart (of those w/o descriptions) I revisit the most. iThink uKnow y.
Also it's so strange for me to see Lorca (that I'd put in my top 10 greatest albums) next to Twin Infinitives (that I'd put in my top 10 worst).

I’ve got beef with this list:

1. There’s a complete disregard for regional folk or international releases. It’s entirely Anglo-centric with a dash of Germany.

2. Volunteers looks like it got lost here.

3. Where is Beethoven? : P

This is one of my favorite charts I've seen. I appreciated reading your thoughts about the River. Not my top Springsteen album but it's definitely his most robust (aside from maybe Nebraska), and I appreciate your thoughts. The year breakdown in your chart is almost the opposite of mine: light on 2000-present, heavy on 60s, 70s, and 90s. Yet somehow this is still quite incredible.

Much respect, even if my aesthetic doesn't align in the album era past about 20-30 of these (which is still kind of high). Beatles4EVR... hehe.

Really really good list whose 60s and 70s picks give us something different to the mainstream dad-rock (phew!!).

I'd love to see some of your personal thoughts on these albums in note form; I've noticed that quite a few of these picks are Scaruffi favourites (nothing intrinsically wrong with that, he's a man with a refined palette) and get the impression you rate his opinion very highly. I don't share his aversion to the 21st century and as much as I adore Joanna Newsom I can't agree that she's made the two best albums of the last 21 years (as per your chart), but I respect your opinion nonetheless.

Here's a few underground favourites of mine from the last two decades that hopefully make the musical landscape today seem less doom and gloom!

Stars Of The Lid - The Tired Sounds Of Stars Of The Lid (2001)
Tim Hecker - Virgins (2013)
The Field - From Here We Go Sublime (2007)
The Brave Little Abacus - Just Got Back From The Discomfort, We're Alright (2010)
Julianna Barwick - The Magic Place (2011)
