Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

I don't understand why this chart is rated 78 when it is very similar (and just as good )to the charts that are rated 85 and higher.

how come your chart which has infinite better choices than other charts that are coddled on here only has a measly score of 80 while those other ones with the most predictable and boring dad rock lists get a score of 85+
?
good list yo. A lil scaruffi but that's alright as he has great taste and it's better than people who base their list off of p4k and rolling stone magazine lol

Haha yeah, you caught me red handed, I do enjoy reading Pitchfork. Like you say, they're probably the best resource for new music and, on the whole, pretty reliable (though they were less than fond of Daft Punk's Discovery upon its initial release). I also think Drowned in Sound and The Quietus are pretty good for music coverage. I agree that Kings of Leon have become a joke of a band now, which is a real shame as I thoroughly enjoyed their first two albums (don't get me started on Sex On Fire!). I was fortunate enough to see The Black Keys live a few years back, and they really do put on a good show. Hah yeah university life can take its toll on your finances, fortunately here in the UK we get quite a lot of government funding, so I was able to blow about half of my loan on CDs.

YEAHHHHHH!!!! "Unknown Pleasures" the come back ;) And I notice that "Murmur" has overtaken "The Queen is Dead". Like your new entries! I'm going to add "Astral Weeks" to my chart, can't stop listening to it.
