Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

I know you're being facetious, but can actually identify with your comment about needing to hear more hip hop; my 2014 chart is notably lacking in that genre. I did listen to a fair amount of hip hop in 2014, but there just wasn't that much that clicked for me. I did include releases by Isaiah Rashad and Run the Jewels, and a few that just missed were the albums by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Shabazz Palaces, Azealia Banks (assuming we're calling that hip hop), CunninLynguists, and Open Mike Eagle. But none of these did enough for me to warrant bumping out any of the albums I already have in my top 100. I'm interested in exploring some of the less obvious choices you have listed here, as I bet there are some gems.
