Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

One of the best charts I've ever seen, any chart with The Stone Roses, Nick Drake, and The Replacements is amazing let alone one with only 25 picks.

Thanks for rating mine. I'm new so it's a work in progress. I can tell you're younger than this old muso from your excellent and interesting list. Love that you got The Holy Bible in there. Would be interested to see your top 100...go on, get on it!

Very similar tastes to myself here ! Loving the Ok Computer/Pink Moon inclusion .. Nothing quite like British melancholia ! Few in here I will try myself eg Minor Threat
