Top 40 Greatest Music Albums by ewehrle92 Unknown

I'm still slowly, but surely, making my way through a lot of albums, but I wanted to post my first ever list of my favorite albums. I'd like to think my taste is pretty eclectic, but these albums are the ones I constantly make my way back to every time. Some are just plain awesome in their inventiveness, and others are just pure beauty, and others have just gotten me through tough times. All of these are deeply personal to me in some way, and I hope to find even more to add to this list throughout my journey into musical history.

I know this is certainly not an album that would make anyone's top 100 of a decade alone, but it's comfort music to the extreme. It's mainly my #1 due to how deeply personal it is to me, but the music itself is gorgeous and relaxing in itself.

This is easily one of the most introspective albums of my life. It forces me to relive each emotion I've ever felt and reflect on my life. And then again, that's why music exists, isn't it?

My first Sufjan, my forever Sufjan. I love the idea of concept albums, and this one has equal shares of innovation and emotion - not nearly on the level of "Adz," but damn close (to be fair, they are drastically different styles mind you). Not to mention, it's the perfect road trip album.

Just as with Neutral Milk Hotel, this one took quite a few listens before I realized the brilliance of it. Sure, the lyrics are off-the-wall, but the songs also didn't have any real coherence that I could tell. But upon further listens, I realized that it was basically jazz-rock. It wasn't about hitting the perfect notes or scales, but making it up with heart. The perfect album to listen to as a grungy teenager in a room alone; "Late Nineties Bedroom Rock" is right.

After falling in love with their sophomore (though I like to think of it as their debut) album, "You Forgot It In People," I thought this was an utter disgrace of a follow-up. It was quirky without any of the emotion. Felt like jazz without the heart. Further listens (just as with the other album) really proved me wrong. It might not be as melancholic as their prior album, but it's got just as much heart if not more. One user on here said it best when they stated this as their "'happy' album" because it really does lift you up in ways I hadn't felt music do in a long while. And with nearly 40 band members playing at one time, it's amazing there's even this much coherence, but there is - even on a spiritual level. In time, this might even top "YFIIP."

Favorite tracks: "It's All Gonna Break," "Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)," "Swimmers."

There are three albums I consider pivotal to my music taste and maturity in life: "Meteora" by Linkin Park (the CD that got me into music), "Songs for a Blue Guitar" by Red House Painters (the CD that broadened my scope into what it is now), and this album. I heard "In Rainbows" first and it stayed with me throughout my high school years, but this album pulled me away from the hardcore alternative I listened to and into a realm of pure beauty and bliss. Each track is so unique and it really showed me what music could be outside of trying to please the masses. This really reached for something deeper, both internally and externally. And it succeeded.

Another incredible example of why I love concept albums. Colin Meloy's lyrics are easily some of the best I've ever heard in music and on a whole other level of intelligent. With this album, in particular, each word is perfectly suited to the theme of the album and not a single chord or note feels out of place despite it's grand scope. Just as with Fleet Foxes, this album really feels like it belongs to a different time many, many years ago. Special shout-out to "The Crane Wife 1 & 2" which has to be one of my favorite tracks ever recorded. An album full of misery, fear, anger, lust, but above all hope.

Favorite tracks: The aforementioned "The Crane Wife 1 & 2," "Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)," "Sons & Daughters."

As mentioned before, this is akin to "Pet Sounds" in that each harmony is fully realized and captivating, while the music is perfectly polished and produced and the lyrics are simple but profound. Robin Pecknold's voice really brings you back to this time depicted on the cover art, and the music along with it really brings out that sunny disposition as well. It's beautiful in every way, and really makes you want to go out and see the world.

I always go back and forth on which M83 I prefer. I always, naturally, fall back onto the grand and cinematic scale of "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming," but "Saturdays = Youth" is the musical equivalent to the best John Hughes film ever made. It's from 2008 but feels like it could have been pulled right out of the 1980s and that owes a huge debt to Anthony Gonzalez's passion for both film and music from that era. This is the album that offered something personal and introspective where "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" reached for something further within the universe. It's a difficult choice, but today I'll say it belongs here.

Favorite tracks: "Graveyard Girl," "Kim & Jessie," "Too Late."

I'm sure the only reason my dad bought this CD over a decade ago was because of "Primitive's" limited radio play, but I still grew up on it. Much to my surprise, it's not as popular as it deserves to be on this site (or in general). It's an album, much like MGMT's "Oracular Spectacular," that truly strives to make each and every song a unique style from its last. And it succeeds magnificently. There are shades of Beach Boys, Beatles, heavy shades of Velvet Underground, and even a little bit of The Strokes and Pixies. But even with all of that in mind, their sound is still so unique and Congleton's voice really brings you back to a different time. How this band never took off after such a remarkable debut is beyond me, but I still yearn each and every day for something new from them. Until then, I still have this remarkable debut that even makes wonderful use of a Velvet Underground cover.

Favorite tracks: "Stay Where You Are," "Michigan," "Young Urban."
