Born in 1974, I didn't start to seriously get into music until the late 80's so this is the chart of someone who was almost but not quite there. For me the 80's was a decade where there was so much overproduced rubbish around that the artists that kicked against it did so with so much conviction. It was the last decade in which there were real underground, counter culture musical movements. In the 90's MTV brought the outsider bands of the grunge years to the forefront of popular culture and coupled with the advent of the internet everything became so much more accessible. Maybe it's me romanticising my teenage years but I personally preferred it when you had to put some effort into finding bands you liked. You invested more into the process and in return the rewards were greater, you felt like part of a club that gave you an identity. I nearly missed the 80's and I really miss the 80's.
