My favorite track on LZ4 is not Stairway or even Levee, but rather Going to California. Especially considering where music was at in 1966, it is very hard to believe that a guy could create this music almost single handedly. Composition and production-wise, this album is a complete masterpiece and showcases the genius of Brian Wilson like never before, or after. I think the Beatles were a better band than the Beach Boys, but for me, "Pet Sounds" is better than any Beatle album. There is absolutely no flaws in it and, in my perception, it is the very first album that really felt like an album. "Rubber Soul" was close, then "Pet Sounds" was it. Thats a lot of grund covered in one album, and they managed to do each of these disparate genres wonderfully. This is the kind of album where a good song from some genre like "gregorian chant" wouldnt feel terribly out of place, and the beatles would probably do it well. "  [+]  Reply

That and the fact that Marr was very literally on fire and the songs were the very best to have been written (how can There's a Light That Never Goes Out not be one of the greatest songs ever written?). With its simplistic harmonic progressions and expectable cadences, and with its lo-fi production value, and Jeff Magnum's vocals (under normal circumstances, underwhelming), the tracks are not exactly complex in a musical context. But it's these very qualities that In the Aeroplane over the Sea owes its charm. If, on the other hand, we consider the highlights, what we have is a very carefully arranged and structured work with seamless transitions from track to track, and centering around (or influenced by) the birth, experiences, death, and memory of a miss Anne Frank. This can literally be considered an album - or a concept album, if you must need call it that - as opposed to a collection of songs, which has invariably become the norm for developing records. We have beautifully elementary horn arrangements by Robert Schneider and Scott Spillane. What we have are raw, realistic vocals relating stories naturally, sanguinely, and without restraint. What we have is Magnum's lyricism that's vivid in its descriptions. While it might not be impressive in ways normally envisioned by listeners and critics of rock, ItAotS is spirited enough to ameliorate most of the complaints that arise. This piece requires more than five listens to 'get it' - it's not an instant payoff. Allow it to grow on you. "  [+]  Reply

"This is not art! This is disgusting!" he shouts, unable to understand how anybody could find pleasure in something so terrible. Is this man correct? Subjectively, yes. If he does not enjoy the art, then to him it has no personal value. But to deny the art any value whatsoever would be a crime. Vulgarity of this sort can be used to push an artistic point. Would a war painting be complete without violent imagery? Would Michaelangelo's statues be complete without penises? Would a portrayal of a stereotype be complete without a phrase such as "my dick is big"? No. By including such a statement, Kendrick addresses the stereotype that nobody else has the guts to talk about so bluntly. Some things, such as this, are not vulgar- they are real. Black stereotypical characteristics such as this, that are used to define who Kendrick is based on his physical features, are real things. Many people, I'm sure, don't view Kendrick as an artist but as just another black man. Those who do are missing the bigger picture- its only vulgar because it tries to portray the vulgarity of the world. If you can't enjoy it, that's fine, but you can't ignore the truth of the world we live in."  [+]  Reply
